About

Coach. Author. Bridge between the science and the sport.

For more than 20 years I've coached ultramarathon runners — from first-time 50K athletes to champions of Western States and UTMB. I pioneered the application of sports-science research to ultrarunning, translating what the lab actually shows into what works on the trail.

I lead the CTS High Performance Team, wrote Training Essentials for Ultrarunning, hosted the Koopcast for 247 episodes, and write a column for Ultrarunning Magazine. I also developed the curriculum for the UESCA ultrarunning coach certification, so part of the job is training coaches, not just athletes. If you race ultras, my fingerprints are probably on something in your training.

How Coaching Works

Performance by design.

Coaching isn't a plan you receive — it's a loop we run together. Six stages, always turning, every input feeding the next decision.

Use My Tools

The analysis I run for my athletes. Free, for you.

No paywall, ever. Both are in final testing — they open in the next few weeks. Here is exactly what is coming.

Athlete Progress Report

A season-over-season dashboard of your running: volume, grade-adjusted pace, vert, long runs — the same review I do with my athletes.

The engine is built and tested — I’m finishing the last leg, the part that renders and publishes your report. Opening shortly. Leave your email and I’ll tell you the day it opens.

Two seasons is what makes this a comparison instead of a snapshot. Either route below produces the same report.

Your export
A zip straight from your watch account is fine — you do not need to unpack it. .fit, .gpx, .tcx or .csv.
Read-only, and one time — I pull your runs, then you can disconnect. Your files are read in this browser, not on a server.

Race Pace Plan

Aid-station splits with A/B/C goals — validated against how runners like you actually ran your race, not how a calculator thinks they did.

Aid-station splits validated against the real finisher cohort. In testing behind the Progress Report. Leave your email and I’ll tell you the day it opens.

Inside the loop

A real athlete check-in

A mid-block video review I sent to an athlete — the workout, the data, what changes next. Name redacted on screen and in audio.
